Wickerham & Lomax

Wickerham & Lomax build meticulously fabricated installations, sculptures, and digital images. Their material comes from the margins of public life: gossip, ephemera, vernacular forms, and the vanishing architecture of queer culture. Working together since 2009, Daniel Wickerham (b. 1986) and Malcolm Lomax (b. 1986) take what they gather and translate it into objects for two publics: one that reads the surface, one that reads the room. A construction fence becomes a message board; a handbag, a reliquary; a bar stool, a self-portrait.

In American Pest (2024–25), hundreds of small acrylic objects—replica phones, rats, snowmen—are scattered like debris around a core set of major works: resin dream crushers, gel pen drawings on customized stationery, campaign T-shirts painted and pasted into near-illegibility and set in black matte scaffolding. Together they turn the gallery into a speculative ecosystem of invader and host, where contamination, control, and belonging blur the political and the apolitical, the threatening and the familiar.

Alongside gallery and institutional work, Wickerham & Lomax have built a growing practice in public commissions. Recent projects include Soft Gym, a 3,825-square-foot permanent park installation in Baltimore commissioned through Bloomberg Philanthropies' Inviting Light initiative, and Coming Soon, forty-two large-scale images installed around an active construction site. Forthcoming work includes a commissioned artwork for Baltimore's Tyson Street Corridor with PI.KL Studio and a residency partnership with Central Baltimore Partnership.

Wickerham & Lomax's work has been presented at institutions including the New Museum, Artists Space, Metro Pictures, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Brown University, and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, with commissions and exhibitions at Frieze New York, Maison Margiela, and The London EDITION. In 2021 the Baltimore Museum of Art acquired Romance as Intrusion (2020) for its permanent collection, and Artforum commissioned the duo for its Artist Project series. Their work is also held in the collection of Cash App and in numerous private collections. They are recipients of the 2015 Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize and the 2020 Trawick Prize, and were finalists for the 2025 Creative Capital Award and the 2026 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize.
