KDR is pleased to present No Wind, a solo exhibition of new photographs by Florida-born, Miami-based artist Ian Patrick O’Connor, his first with the gallery.
Wind is the only one of the four elements you can’t see directly; you can only feel it through its effects or through the absence of them. On one level, No Wind refers to something literal: these images can’t be made in any wind above three knots, or the once seamless paper turns into a sail, and the whole setup collapses. On another, No Wind suggests a metaphorical reading: something hidden within calmness, and the quiet psychological tension that slowly unfolds from it.
This exhibition marks the latest chapter in his series, comprised of nine captures, extending a body of work O’Connor has developed over the past decade. The idea began simply. He takes a roll of backdrop paper - the kind made for studios with controlled environments - and brings it out into the world. Now spanning more than forty works, shot across deserts, jungles, mountains, beaches, and snow-covered landscapes, the series is shaped less by control than by responsiveness to natural conditions.
The colored panels become visual mantras, a uniform shape that functions as both a point of focus and a portal into the landscape. Color carries its own wavelength, long used across traditions as a tool for stillness and contemplation. O'Connor approaches these ideas gently, letting them emerge through atmosphere rather than direct symbolism. The photographs emphasize presence, time, and subtle shifts in light. The tones of paper work with the surrounding environment to create a quiet, meditative quality that encourages a slower, more attentive experience of the landscape.
No. 36, the largest work in the exhibition, stands upright, a warm, golden-yellow paper, in the middle of a dense, lush forest. The surrounding vegetation, layers of ferns, broad-leafed plants, tangled vines, and tall trees, presses in from every direction, yet the panel holds its ground with quiet authority. Stillness and awe don’t require travel. O’Connor solidifies the idea that it is available wherever you can find a pause.
