FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KDR is delighted to present "Anonyme Skulpturen," a solo exhibition of new works by New York-based artist Sam Stewart. This exhibition marks his first with the gallery and will be on view from May 10th through June 8th, 2024.
In "Anonyme Skulpturen," Stewart embarks on an introspective odyssey, drawing inspiration from the influential German couple Bernd and Hilla Becher. The Becher's work, which documented structures often overlooked and in decline during the Information Age, serves as a rich historical backdrop for Stewart's exploration.
The Becher’s focused on documenting industrial structures and German half-timbered and masonry homes. Stewart reimagines their "Anonymous Sculptures," offering an admiring yet innovative approach to transforming vintage photographs into wooden lathed forms and large-scale rubber stamp sculptures made as tools to make prints. Stewart leads us on a pure art historical journey of woodturning, molding, and casting these once one-dimensional images into three-dimensional objects.
Stewart seeks to honor the legacy of the Becher’s while taking some creative liberties and offering fresh interpretations of these buildings. He hopes to spark viewers with the same sense of wonder and recognition he experienced when he first encountered their photographs that emphasize the formal and beautiful similarities of buildings constructed for the same function and in turn contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of these often-overlooked aspects of our world.
Presented alongside Stewart's handmade works are a set of twelve gelatin silver prints titled "Untitled (Watertower O)," 1988 by Bernd and Hilla Becher, which are on loan from The Rubell Museum, Miami, FL.
